Sponsored by the North Fork Trails Association, this summer’s North Fork Interlocal Agreement Meeting was a resounding success. Kudos to all the folks who came together to make it a real community-based event. Extra credit is due to the lunch crew who not only fed about 50 people, but organized the transformation from meeting room to dining hall and back again, all in the space of an hour.

We had 70 people there, including about 28 agency representatives from (deep breath) the Flathead National Forest, Glacier National Park, Montana FWP, Montana DNRC, Flathead County, U.S. Border Patrol, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, The Glacier Institute and the U.S. Federal Highway Administration (no, really!). And we only finished 10 minutes late.

Wow!

One of the two gates in the Hay Creek Drainage opened on schedule July 1; the other remains closed for a few more days. The Moran Creek Road (Rd 5241) gate is open, allowing motorized access as far as the Moran Creek Trail trailhead. The gate across Hay Creek Road (Rd 376) at the 5.5. mile point will remain closed for a while due to slide damage about two miles past the gate.

Moose photo-bomber!

Jim Rittenburg and I got photo-bombed by a moose this morning at the Trail 3/Trail 26 intersection! I like to think the moose appreciated our trail clearing efforts.

Flathead Forest Supervisor leaves for position at regional headquarters

Kurt Steele, Flathead National Forest Supervisor has moved to a position with Region 1 Forest Headquarters. In the meantime, Deputy Flathead Forest Supervisor Tami McKenzie is holding the fort . . .

Flathead National Forest Supervisor Kurt Steele has accepted a new position at the U.S. Forest Service’s Northern Region headquarters in Missoula, capping a three-and-a-half-year stint overseeing 2.4 million forested acres in northwest Montana that in the past year had become beset in controversy.

According to an agency spokesperson, Steele “was offered and accepted” a new post as deputy director at the regional office that involves “environmental planning,” although the details of the position are still being worked out.

“I think it’s just a lateral move to a position at the regional office level,” Dan Hottle, the federal agency’s northern region public information officer, said Friday afternoon, when details about the transition were still scant. “It’s a new role and he will work closely with the regional leadership team on a number of different projects across the region as deputy director. His start date is still being negotiated right now.”
